Koala Woman Says
Koala records in this electorate are concentrated in the south from Narangba northwards to Burpengary and then further to Caboolture. There seems to be a small but resilient population at Toorbul in the east. This is in the Moreton Bay Council area north of Brisbane, and it is one of the fastest developing areas in Australia, especially in Burpengary and Morayfield where Koala rescuers constantly respond to calls for displaced Koalas hit by cars. The Council adopted a new Planning Scheme in 2020 which gives some regard to Koala habitat issues including corridors, but we know that if Koalas are to avoid extinction, they need large patches of bush, not “corridors to nowhere”. In any case Koalas in this area live in the suburbs and are under constant threat from cars and dogs. Many Koalas continue to get killed crossing the Bruce Highway particularly north and south of Burpengary. Elsewhere in this electorate Koalas are in extremely low densities (only the occasional record) so you’d be extremely lucky to see one in the hillier areas around Woodford.
Judging by records, Koalas in Longman are in big trouble, e.g., there were 1008 records between 2004 – 2013, but only 120 between 2014 – 2023. The new Planning Scheme looks like too little, too late, and as usual, the Commonwealth’s Vulnerable listing in 2012 has done nothing to arrest this decline, and the Endangered listing in 2022 will no doubt also do nothing.
