Koala Woman Says

In this electorate the western limit for Koalas is just east of Hughenden, but the only recent record here is in Moorinya National Park. Further north on the Newcastle Range near Georgetown, Koalas were discovered in the process of developing a solar wind farm. Other renewable energy projects, e.g., Mount James near Highenden, typically go for hills and ridges because they weren’t cleared by farmers, so now they are the only habitats left for Koalas in these areas. There were Koalas in Undara National Park 20 years ago, but these seem to have disappeared into the lava tubes this Park is famous for. Seriously though, as in the Maranoa electorate to the south Koalas are contracting their range coastward as the climate gets drier and hotter. South of Mareeba on the Atherton Tableland there might be a few around Malanda and west of Cardwell in the western fringes of Girringun National Park. There don’t appear to be any left around Charters Towers; there is a recorded sighting from 2001.

There seems to be a lot of bush on this map, but it contains mostly scattered eucalypts, hence the low estimate for the koala population. The coastal portion of this electorate is the Wet Tropics Bioregion, there are no Koalas living in this rainforest.
