Koala Woman Says

The western part of this electorate is National Park with very poor habitat quality and only 17 records, and only 5 since the entire area was burnt in the 2019-2020 bushfires. Bargo south of Campbelltown has the honour of the first recorded sighting of a Koala in 1798. There are still a few Koalas in the area, but most records are suspiciously next to the Hume Freeway and are probably roadkills. The Hume Freeway is obviously an impediment to Koala movement, there are only a few recent records west of the Freeway. Most recent records are along the fringes of Dharawal National Park in the east, right next to planned major housing developments at Wilton where the 5,000 population will grow to 55,000 by 2040, and Appin where 12,900 new homes are planned. Although some Koala corridors are included in development planning, the lack of safe roads is already apparent on Appin Road where both traffic frequency and Koala mortality are increasing. Recent drone surveys have detected 60 Koalas in Parks and Reserves, These Koalas may be safe, it’s the Koalas at risk of inappropriate development that we are concerned about. We need a national Koala Protection Act.
