Koala Woman Says
This electorate includes Magnetic Island off the coast of Townsville; Koalas were introduced in the 1930s and the island has just about all of the Koalas in this electorate. 30% of the Island was burnt in the summer of 2019-2020. The population was estimated at 800 in 2013, and 500 in 2019. We think it is a bit less than that, 400 tops. There only been a few sightings on the mainland and it is hard to understand why the numbers are so low when this electorate has some of the best habitat of any Queensland electorate. If there were no Koalas on Magnetic Island, then there would be none in Herbert.
