Koala Woman Says
Most Koalas in this electorate are sitting smack bang in a high urban growth area and will need a great deal of management for their long-term survival. The Park Ridge Master Planned Area wasn’t planned by, or for, Koalas, you can be sure of that. It was planned for 30,000 people and all the cars and dogs that come with them. With a bit of foresight, this could have been a great opportunity for Koala-friendly planning, but no. There appears to be a misprint in one of the brochures outlining this Plan: “District wildlife corridors are established to link important habitat within the MPA to eternal conservation areas.” Eternal? We don’t think so. We think they meant “external” in which case the corridors are merely a means for Koalas to leave and then it won’t be Logan Council’s problem anymore. Where are these eternal conservation areas? We can’t find them.
Where are the other Koalas in this electorate? There are quite a few in Shailer Park/Cornubia/Carbrook areas but there has been massive development in the last ten years and these Koalas are disappearing. There are a few southwest of Beenleigh, further south it appears that there is reasonable-quality habit, but there are few sightings. Sounds like the ideal place to dump Koalas removed from the development at Pimpana in the neighbouring Fadden electorate, doesn’t it? This is what Gold Coast City Council did, and guess what? Wild dogs killed at least a third of them. It’s time for the Commonwealth Government to step up and do their job. It’s time for the national Koala Protection Act.
