Koala Woman Says
This number looks wrong, but there are a few reasons why we don’t think it is. Firstly, the remaining habitat isn’t the best for Koalas – most of it is rainforest or low-quality eucalypt habitat. Good habitats are cleared for human development, Koalas get forced into the bush that nobody wants; these patches can’t support Koalas in the same numbers: they are just “hanging on”, but for how long? Any decent habitat left is usually next to the roads, and we know cars and Koalas don’t mix. There are a few Koalas between Nambour and Kenilworth and around Buderim, there might be a few near Eumundi but all these Koalas are at risk from development, cars and dogs. There have only been 10 records since 2020, so these Koalas look like they’re on the way out.
