Lesson 1 & 2

5 April 2022 –

Recruits,

Welcome to the first two lessons of the ‘Koala Army’s Guide to Democracy.’

Koalas want the Koala Protection Act. But first, the Koala Army must understand HOW to do so. Pidgeon Squadron leader Bill Jr is here to explain how democracy works, and how the Koala Protection Act can get enacted!

Lesson 1:

Representative Democracy

Representative Democracy is when ‘the people’ vote for an elected representative who listens to what they want, then votes for laws on the people’s behalf.

Representative Democracy is when ‘the people’ vote for an elected representative who listens to what they want, then votes for laws on the people’s behalf.

From every electorate in the country, an elected representative is voted in by ‘the people’ to form the House of Representatives (the ‘Lower House’).

Lesson 2:

How Laws are Made

A minister can propose a NEW LAW in the House of Representatives.
This should reflect the wishes of ‘the people’.

All the elected representatives then debate and VOTE on the proposed law. Their vote should ALSO reflect the wishes of ‘the people’ in the electorate they represent.

If you are in Australia, find out if your local member supports the Koala Protection Act. If they don’t, you can always ask them: Why not?
