December 2008

30 November 2008 –

Dear koala supporters,

On behalf of the Australian Koala Foundation, Merry Christmas! I do hope that 2009 will be a terrific year for you and your friends and family.

I am looking forward to a Christmas break but before I go, I just wanted to say, how grateful I am as always to have you as our supporters. We could not do what we do without you.

This year has seen some movement towards greater protection of the Koala. The Australian Government has reviewed the National Koala Conservation Strategy and has realised that it does not work. They are currently working very hard to produce a new one to be implemented in 2009 and 2010. Although this is a giant step forward it is still not enough and I am convinced that we will need to continue to pressure the Australian Government to list the koala federally as a threatened species; in fact, we have just nominated the South East Queensland population as critically endangered.  Sometimes I feel that our concerns fall on deaf ears, but there is some positive movement forward.

My commitment to this is steadfast.

The AKF remains convinced that we need to write a new piece of legislation called the National Koala Act and we will talk more of that in 2009.

As you know, I was recently invited to visit the Polar Bears in Canada and with this email I am sending a photo of a mother polar bear and her twin cubs feeding – a sight I will never forget as long as I live. The visit and the similarities between our beautiful koala bear – oops, marsupial – and the magnificent polar bear has made me even more committed to protecting wild places on this planet.

Please continue to send your wishes and thoughts – I read every one.

Thank you, Deborah

Dear Koala Supporters, I am sure you have all seen this image of Sam the Koala being given a drink by a firefighter. It is the image that captured the world’s attention in recent weeks when the...
