Whitlam

Koala Woman Says

This electorate used to be Throsby and was renamed in the 2016 redistribution. There was a major fire on the Woronora Plateau in 2002 which impacted on Koalas. There were 60 sightings in 2014, part of an extensive project to find offsets for proposed coalmining under the plateau. The area is part of Sydney’s water catchment and you’d think it was protected but it’s not. There are major concerns about the effect of mining on the catchment, and lowering the water table will affect Koala habitat quality: trees need water. There were 10 Koala sightings around Mittagong between 2000 and 2010, so there are probably still a few here. Recent sightings indicate a small population near Robertson in the south of the electorate.
