Koala Woman Says
Koalas are generally only found on the western fringes of this electorate in close proximity to the Chermside Hills Reserve where 40 Koalas were located in 2017, and 12 in 2018. This is not an isolated population; Cabbage Tree Creek connects it to other patches of bush in the west so there is some opportunity for recruitment and dispersal. Unfortunately only one Koala has been recorded here since 2020.There were a couple of injured Koala reports in the Bracken Ridge and Nudgee areas in previous years, but in reality most Koalas in the east disappeared 30 years ago.
Unlike other electorates where citizen science has added many more Koala records in the last few years, this hasn’t happened in Lilly. We are confident that this isn’t because Lilley citizens aren’t interested in Koalas, but because there are so few to report. It certainly looks like Koalas are nearing extinction in Lilley.
