Koala Woman Says

This number looks wrong, but there are a few reasons why we don’t think it is. Firstly the remaining habitat isn’t the best for Koalas – most of it is rainforest or low-quality eucalypt habitat. Good habitats are cleared for human development, Koalas get forced into the bush that nobody wants; these patches can’t support Koalas in the same numbers: they are just “hanging on”, but for how long? Any decent habitat left is usually next to the roads, and we know cars and Koalas don’t mix. There are a few Koalas between Nambour and Kenilworth and around Buderim, there might be a few near Eumundi but all these Koalas are at risk from development, cars and dogs. These Koalas look like they’re on the way out.
