Koala Woman Says

We don’t know a lot about this population in the Dry Tropics between Mackay and Townsville; it is small and concentrated in the coastal lowlands where the best habitats have been extensively cleared for sugar cane farms that have been developed since the 1860s. Further inland, cattle grazing has resulted in the clearing of other good habitat. Bowen has the Abbott Point coal terminal where a Koala was discovered on a coal train a couple of years ago, quite a few Koalas are struck by trains on the journey from the coal mines. St Bees Island and a couple of other islands in this electorate have small Koala populations which were translocated to escape the fur trade and they may be resilient to changing climate, but really we are only talking about a couple of hundred at the most.
