Koala Woman Says

There is a huge area of bush in this electorate, mostly National Park. Why is it National Park? The rugged landscape and poor soils meant that nobody else wanted it.
We know Koalas prefer trees on fertile soils, and there have been three sightings near Dural in the south in 2000, 2012 and 2014, and five in others in the whole electorate. The most recent is 2018, right next to an area burnt in the summer of 2019 – 2020.
Possibly Australia’s first Koala Sanctuary was established at Mount Kuring-gai in 1953 with 20 Koalas. Even then it was recognised that suburban cars and dogs posed a great threat to Koalas. A huge bushfire devastated the Park in 1994, this would have killed most of the Koalas.
