KOALA WOMAN SAYS
This electorate includes the 2,500 square kilometre Otway Ranges. For years the Victorian Government used the Otway Ranges “Koala over-population problem” as an excuse to avoid greater protection for Victoria’s Koalas – they “had to many”. Now we know that the “problem” is limited to a few hundred hectares where the Victorian Government has recently culled over 700 Koalas. This is not sustainable management and cannot be used as an excuse against a Koala Protection Act any longer. Our scientists have said this many Koalas, but I am not so sure.
Elsewhere in this electorate there are Koalas around Lorne and in the Brisbane Ranges near Meredith.
Estimated AKF Koala Population: 3,500 - 6,000
Estimated Koala Habitat left: 42.5%
Estimated Federal Government Population: 45,000 - 70,000
The Victorian Government opposed the protection of the koala
and there is no Federal protective legislation in place.
