Volunteering at the Australian Koala Foundation

3 August 2012 –

We get a lot of people enquiring about VOLUNTEERING at AKF and we thought we should let you know what it’s like. I have been volunteering for 3 months now and I can’t tell you how much I have learned. From the moment I stepped foot inside the office I started my research into the plight of the Koala.  As an Australian who has always had an affiliation with animals and a great passion for them, I couldn’t believe that I didn’t know how grave the situation is in the bush.   When I first went bush with Deborah, I learnt how to find Koalas.  You look for a scratch on a tree and of course for their droppings.  I am embarrassed to say that the first time I saw one, after Deborah showed me the contents and I smelt the eucalyptus, I took the dropping home in my pocket to show my family what I had done at work that day… And the first time I had a big cuddle with a Koala and I smelt it! Oh my gosh, that Koala smelt like sweet, clean, yummy goodness. I’m so thankful for the people I talk to every day in the office who are trying to save the Koalas and all I can say is never give up, because we are the only voices for the Koalas. Koalas are such a delicate animal that need hard-core tender loving care and it is our responsibility to make a difference. We always need volunteers from all different walks of life to do many a task both in the office and in our Save The Koala Shop, and based on my time here, I know that it will be an eye opening experience that you will never forget. If you would like to help us save koalas in the wild and their habitat, email your resume to akf@savethekoala.com. We look forward to hearing from you.  Guess what they have offered me a job!
