Hello Koala Lovers,
I hope you are enjoying the information about the Koala Army’s March for Creatures Great and Small and watching Urban talk about the problems in the bush in readiness for 1 September. I would love to hear what you think.
This morning, I saw a post about a former trapper (such an old and outdated word isn’t it?) confessing that in 2022 Wildlife Services in the United States approved the killing of 56,089 coyotes, 26,371 beaver, 2,432 foxes, 515 bobcats, 450 black bears, 219 gray wolves, 205 mountain lions, 7 grizzly bears, and gassed 200 coyote dens.
I have no idea where from, but it does beg the question, how long can any species sustain such incessant killing?
Over the last couple of weeks, I went to Tasmania, where I was raised, and looked at the extinction of the Tasmanian Tiger, which you will hear more about over the coming months. Our March will really focus on the very simple call to action of “no more killing and cruelty to our creatures great and small”.
As I have written before, industries in our country get a Permit to Take when their projects are approved. It means they can kill anything with impunity.
The Koala Protection Act will not allow that and our call to action to Minister Plibersek is “enact this now”.
It is a bit like James Bond isn’t it? He had a Licence to Kill. Our country needs to get into the 21st Century and it would appear the United States Government does too. Let us all speak for animals. No time for more cruelty to our native wildlife. I am truly outraged that this goes on and no-one really talks about it.
It is hard to collate the numbers of our species in Australia that gets killed with approvals, but it would be in the thousands.
Urban is currently researching, so you will hear more.
See you in Canberra on 1 September.
Deborah
