Guide to Democracy 7 & 8

Welcome to the next two lessons of the ‘Koala Army’s Guide to Democracy.’
This week, Urban will be exploring the role of the Media in politics and what their responsibilities are when it comes to representing the voice of the people. He will also look at the concept of Political Parties and some of the tactics they use to win community favour during election campaigns.

The media’s role is to give voice to ‘the people’s’ concerns and issues that politicians need to address.

The media’s other responsibility is to empower citizens by keeping them well informed, and by keeping politicians transparent and accountable.

Photo opportunities and slogans during campaigning are far less important than POLICIES. Do they support the Koala Protection Act?

Political parties have policies that they expect all its candidates to support and vote together. However, every candidate should first and foremost represent ‘the people’ who elected them.
