Recruits,
Welcome to the next two lessons of the ‘Koala Army’s Guide to Democracy.’ This week, we will be looking at the process of Passing Laws – where they get passed and how. We will also be talking about Federal Laws – what they are and what they mean when enacted.
Read on!
From every electorate in the country, an elected representative is voted in by ‘the people’ to form the House of Representatives (the ‘Lower House’).
A minister can propose a NEW LAW in the House of Representatives. This should always reflect the wishes of ‘the people’.
All the elected representatives then debate and VOTE on the proposed law. Their vote should ALSO reflect the wishes of ‘the people’ in the electorate they represent.
As a federal law, the Koala Protection Act will protect ALL Koala habitat throughout Australia. No Tree, No Me. If it is a Koala habitat tree, then you must not cut it down.
The Koala Protection Act must be enacted on a FEDERAL level. When the KPA is in place – all levels of government will have to abide by the rules.
