Recruits,
Koalas want the Koala Protection Act. But first, the Koala Army must understand HOW to do so. We are here to explain how democracy works, and how the Koala Protection Act can get enacted!
Over the coming weeks we’ll be sharing some helpful democracy lessons so we’re all refreshed and informed on our political sytem ahead of Australia’s federal election.
Welcome to the first two lessons of the ‘Koala Army’s Guide to Democracy!’
Representative Democracy is when ‘the people’ vote for an elected representative who listens to what they want, then votes for laws on the people’s behalf.
Independent candidates run for an election without being part of a political party. They stand on their own, representing their community rather than a party’s policies.
A policy is like a promise to ‘the people’, “Vote for me and I will table the Koala Protection Act in parliament.”
Politicians should be accountable to keep the promises they make to ‘the people.’
If you are in Australia, find out if your local member supports the Koala Protection Act. If they don’t, you can always ask them: Why not?
