Conservation groups are dismayed about a court ruling which could see 262 koalas moved from their natural habitat. The case centres on the Shenhua Watermark coal mine in northern New South Wales. An environmental group brought a legal challenge arguing that the state’s planning assessment commission “failed to assess whether the mine would place a viable local koala population at risk of extinction,” unquote. But the New South Wales Land and Environment Court ruled that the mine’s approval was valid. Sarah Sedghi reports.
