Canadian competition winners visit the AKF

The Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) was thrilled to host Canadian competition winners from Nature’s Path Organic Foods this week. The six winners, aged from six to 66, came from across Canada and Washington State and were excited to learn more about Koalas, habitat conservation and environmental issues in Australia.

The competition featured a box of Koala Crisp Cereal which is one of Nature’s Path’s EnviroKidz products. 1% of the sales of the cereal are donated to the AKF to support habitat conservation and environmental education for kids worldwide.

EnviroKidz funding has helped the AKF map Koala habitat across Australia and they are also a large contributor in establishing our Research Station “Quinlans” in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

The event started with some Spot Assessment Technique (SAT) demonstrations conducted by our Chief Ecologist Douglas Kerlin and Landscape Ecologist David Mitchell with the visitors lending a hand looking for Koala scat (droppings) and tree scratches.

Other activities included tree planting, bush walking, mudding the walls of a log cabin, bird watching and of course enjoying some local produce with the grand finale being dinner under the stars.

The following day the group visited the AKF Save the Koala shop in Brisbane and purchased an assortment of fabulous Koala gifts to take home. The event was hailed a great success by both the AKF and Nature’s Path and we look forward to hosting the next group of competition winners from the United States in September.
